The latest series has just come out, everyone has already seen it and you can’t go anywhere without hearing how great it is. Sometimes you feel like there’s nothing you can do about it – you know you’ll immediately go back to watching Netflix. But at the same time, you know that spending the entire weekend on the couch instead of doing things in the world makes you feel guilty.

So what do you do? Well, if you decide to binge watch Netflix this weekend, at least make your binge more productive by using it as fuel for your own binge. Emotion regulation skills. 1. Create positive emotions with positive or funny videos

After spending the last year researching and writing my new book, Outsmart Your Smartphone: Mindful Tech Habits to Find Happiness, Balance, and Connection in Real LifeI learned a lot about technology and wellness.

Broaden and build theory suggests that experiencing positive emotions strengthens our psychological, intellectual, and social resources and allows us to benefit more from our experiences. If you’re in a good mood Watch positive or funny videosYou can make stress management easier later. Remember to mentally store these positive emotions so you can take your good mood with you when you leave the couch.

2. Develop empathy by adopting a new perspective

We Learn to be empathetic by looking at the world through the eyes of others and feeling the emotions they feel. By watching videos that recount the experiences of people different from us, we may be able to develop our ability to empathize with others. It doesn’t always feel good to show compassion because we feel the pain of others, but empathy is the key Build strong personal relationships and feel more connected to others.

3. Practice reappraisal while watching dramatic scenes

During my graduate studies, my research team often asked participants to watch emotional scenes from films. We would then give them instructions how to reassess the situation – for example, giving characters advice on how to feel better, thinking about what can be learned from the experience, or imagining possible positive consequences. Of assess the situation more positivelyPeople were able to reduce their negative emotions. With this strategy, you can also practice positive reappraisal. With practice, you may find it easier to use this strategy in real life.

4. Engage in conscious acceptance

Watching movies is a relatively safe place to experience negative emotions. So instead of suppressing negative emotions, take the opportunity to recognize your emotions, live them fully and experience them. Practice accepting them.
