Do you want to know why you do the things you do? When we use self-reflection, we gain a better understanding of ourselves, our motivations, and our behavior. So let’s learn to think about ourselves.

Many of our habits, behaviors and predefined programs are buried within us. Subconscious. They act in a sort of “control room” and control the way we think, feel and act, which often has a negative impact on our well-being (see here). Well-being quiz to see how you are doing). If we want to stay in control, we must look beyond consciousness and change certain programming that no longer serves us. One way to access the unconscious is through self-reflection, that is, looking in the mirror and analyzing what we see or feel as objectively as possible in order to better understand ourselves and our thoughts, feelings and behavior. But how can we engage in such deep introspection?

What is self-reflection?

Self-reflection is defined as a mental process that you can use to expand your understanding of who you are, your values, and why you think, feel, and act the way you do. By thinking about it and becoming more aware of what motivates you, you can more easily make changes that help you. Continue to evolve or improve your life.

Why is self-reflection important?

When we better understand who we are and why we do what we do, we can more easily make changes that allow us to respond more effectively to circumstances. Hopefully this can stop us from saying and doing things we regret.

Preparing for self-reflection

We are very busy, distracted (and addicted to our phones) and therefore seem to have more difficulty thinking about themselves. Because self-reflection requires a rational mind calm mind. Some personal reflections begin with a brief meditationMaybe they take several deep breaths or a few deep breaths to calm their thoughts. Perhaps you would prefer to relax your mind with a Fantastic activity or practice a little Mindfulness (This also includes some personal reflection before you really get started.

Once you feel calm and peaceful, focus on yourself. Choose a specific problem to work on. Call to recall an important incident.

  • What do you think?
  • What makes you think?

Identify the “why” of self-reflection

Try to look deeper with a calm mind. Try to cover the most important aspects of this topic. What did you feel, think or do? Now go ahead and ask yourself: why did you think, feel, or do these things?

This type of inner searching and discovery with introspection can reveal some scary things. So take it at your own pace and keep that in mind. Be kind to yourself as you learn more about what lies beneath.

Using self-reflection as a tool for change

The next step is to cultivate the desire to change the behaviors that bother you. After identifying any problematic aspects of yourself, take small steps and slowly change your behavior so that it better reflects who you want to be, the life you want to lead, etc. what career do you want to pursue.

If you thought “the problem” was “solved” but it comes back, ask yourself again if you missed something important or were hiding something from yourself. It is not easy to change ourselves or our behavior and it may take several attempts to do so. So accept yourself and appreciate yourself for trying.

Other approaches to self-reflection

Self-reflection can be supported or enhanced through the use of other tools such as writing or imagination. For example, I recently received the book You are truean exercise book with guiding questions to help you get to know yourself better. However, if you already have questions, any notebook will do. Just write them down and answer them honestly.

Exercise to Help You Think About Your Best Self

THE best personal exercise can not only help us become more confident, but also help us better understand our strengths and determine where we want to go in our lives. When we use our imagination, our brain experiences the things we imagine as if they were real. So when we imagine the best version of ourselves, our brain can begin to create pathways to help us become that person.
