What if many of your headaches could be avoided with a few simple lifestyle changes? Here are some steps you can take at home to prevent your headaches.

What do you eat?

It turns out that many people experience headaches after eating certain foods. In some people, chocolate triggers headaches. For other people, any food containing sugar can cause headaches. Because everyone’s body is different, it’s a good idea to keep a headache diary to track your headache triggers. Note when you tend to get headaches and note the foods you ate just before the headaches started. After a few headaches, you may notice patterns that help you identify your headache triggers.

What are you drinking?

It’s not just food that can trigger headaches. Beverages containing alcohol, caffeine, or sugar can also cause headaches. Determining which drinks cause headaches is a little more difficult because they may have a delayed effect. Your headache may occur as soon as your alcohol, caffeine or sugar intake decreases. Again, keeping a headache diary can help you determine if your morning coffee might be the cause of your afternoon pain.

Are you drinking enough water?

Your headache may be caused not by what you eat or drink, but by what you don’t eat or drink. Are you drinking enough water? Coffee and soda don’t count. Dehydration can definitely lead to headaches. So when you have a headache, ask yourself: Do I feel completely hydrated?

How do you treat your body?

Many of us spend nearly eight hours a day sitting at a desk and staring at a computer screen. Staying in the same position all day puts enormous strain on your back and neck. Sometimes tight muscles, especially in the neck, can lead to headaches. If your neck is tense or prone to pain, your neck could be the cause of your headaches. To avoid this type of headache, you should get up from your desk every hour. Do some neck stretches and make sure your neck doesn’t have to stay in the exact same position all day.

Fight headaches at home

As you can see, there are many simple changes you can make at home to prevent headaches. Try the four techniques above to see which one works best for you.
