Taking a look at your calendar and scheduling time to be happy will give you a better idea of how much you can reasonably accomplish. Think about when you regularly have free time. Maybe you have 5 minutes to wait in line at Starbucks. Maybe you have 20 minutes to spare while you take the bus to work. Maybe you have a free hour on Saturday morning when the kids are out.
There is no “right” time to devote to your happiness. What’s important is that you have a regular schedule – a time when you have your honor, just as you would keep any other appointment. If that means it can only be 10 minutes a week, then that’s no problem. Plan it. And respect it. This is how we build something new Habits.
During this time, try to be strategic about the skills you practice. For example, I currently have 5 minutes to work each evening Living my values. I set up Google Calendar to remind me to practice this skill every night.
I also have an hour on Saturday to practice one of my favorite happiness skills: Prioritize positivity. My plan is tailored to my schedule as well as my happiness level and interests.
If you don’t already use Google Calendar, I highly recommend using it to plan your free time. Make sure to select the “Repeat” option so that it repeats every day or week in your calendar.
