Accept your negative emotions to reduce them

Emotional acceptance can counterintuitively reduce negative emotions. Once we stop judging and controlling our emotions, they seem to mysteriously resolve themselves. How to accept your negative emotions.

Emotional acceptance refers to our ability to tolerate and even appreciate our emotions as they are. Acceptance requires that we neither avoid nor judge our feelings. Rather, we validate our emotions by allowing them to exist as they are. Acceptance seems almost the opposite of that Emotion regulationbecause it looks like a lack of regulation. However, acceptance has been shown to be an extremely effective way to reduce negative emotions. Once we stop judging and try control our emotionsWe can accept our negative emotions and they mysteriously seem to resolve themselves.

How to practice acceptance

Create negative emotions. You might be thinking about the car that interrupted you, all the things you don’t like about your boss, or something that makes you sad or anxious. Once you have accumulated negative emotions, stop all your thoughts and stay with those negative emotions. Be. Try not to judge, condemn or push them aside. Just experience it and try to accept your negative emotions. Be in your body and feel all the sensations that result from these emotions. If you try to stir up additional negative emotions, take note and stop. Sit with your negative emotions and let them sit until they dissipate.

Once your feelings have passed, reflect on the experience. Ask yourself these questions to find out if you have been able to accept your negative emotions.

  • Was it difficult to deal with negative emotions?
  • Have you found yourself judging your feelings or trying to push them away?
  • How long did it take for your feelings to go away?
  • What did you like or dislike about accepting your feelings?
  • Has this emotion regulation strategy worked for you? Why or why not?

The next time you’re reading the news and are upset by the latest injustice, corporate scandal, or boorish politician, take a step back and pause. Practice letting your feelings simply exist. Be careful not to stir up more negative emotions on this topic. But also be careful not to repress your emotions. Just sit with them without judgment until they dissipate.
