There will be many times in life when you experience difficult situations and strong emotions. In such situations, it may be helpful to use benefit evaluation to examine the benefits of situations that initially seemed negative. Here’s how to do it:

Activity: Discover the benefits

In this activity, you will examine a past negative event. Take a moment to think about something negative you experienced in the past. I know that some negative experiences are very negative. So please choose an experience that is just a little negative – nothing too difficult for you if it’s your first time using this activity.
Please briefly reflect on this negative event for about 30 seconds.

Then spend the next 10 minutes writing about the positive things that came from this experience.
REMEMBER:
You could be greatly rewarded after a negative situation.
Perhaps you are grateful to have had this experience.
Or maybe your situation is better than when you started.

Try to really explore your mind to discover the benefits of the negative situation.

What did people say?

Thank you to everyone who submitted their responses to this activity! And wow, you all found benefits even in the most difficult situations. I hope your post can help others in the community in their own difficult situations.

Here are some situations people have written about and their hopes:

  • I was bullied >> I had friends by my side who could help me in this situation.
  • I stayed alone >> I felt braver.
  • I was fired >> I had more time to work on myself.
  • I cheated emotionally >> My relationship got stronger.
  • I had an abusive partner >> I am more strong-willed.
  • I had a fight with a friend >> It made me more independent.
  • I was hurt >> I learned that my body has limits.
  • My boyfriend broke up with me >> This led me to meet my best friend.
  • I had a panic attack >> I realized I needed to work more on my anxiety.
  • I was hit by a car >> Now I am closer to God.

The next time you find yourself in a difficult situation, see if you can benefit from increasing your positive emotions and sense of purpose.
