Choosing the Right Keywords to Rank in Google Search

Choosing the right keywords is one of the most important steps in any content marketing or search engine optimization (SEO) strategy. Keywords are the bridge between your content and the audience searching for information online. If you choose the wrong keywords, your content may remain invisible despite your efforts and expertise.

On the other hand, the right keywords can propel an article to the top of Google and generate thousands or even millions of views.

I learned this lesson the hard way, but also by accident. My Top article it was an accident. I didn’t write it to beat my competition or to rank higher than everyone else. I simply wrote about a topic that wasn’t well covered online at the time. This article finally appeared at the top of Google and gained attention. 1.3 million views until now.

The lesson? Copying your competitors is not always the best SEO strategy. Sometimes the real opportunity lies in noticing what hasn’t been said and filling that gap with something truly useful.

Why Choosing the Right Keywords Matters

Keywords are more than just words on a page: they are the signals that search engines use to understand the content of your article. They indicate the topic, context and intention behind the content. Choosing the right keywords ensures that your content reaches the right audience (any audience!).

There are different types of keywords to consider:

  • Short-tail keywords: Broad terms with high search volume, such as “SEO” or “digital marketing.”
  • Long-tail keywords: More specific formulations with less competition, e.g. B. “How to choose keywords for SEO?

While short keywords can generate a lot of traffic, they are very competitive and difficult to rank for. Long-tail keywords, on the other hand, allow you to target specific audiences with more precise intent, which can lead to higher engagement and conversions.

My accidentally correct keyword choice

When I wrote my best performing articleI haven’t thought about SEO at all. I didn’t even know SEO existed at the time! I only wrote about topics that I had expertise in and couldn’t really find online.

The result? Google recognized the unique value of my content and ranked it highly. Over time this article has become popular over a million viewsThis proves that originality and usefulness can outperform traditional keyword-based strategies.

Selection of the best keywords

Over the next few years, other authors wrote even better articles and moved the article down in the rankings, but I still learned an important lesson: The best keyword strategy isn’t always about imitating your competitors. It’s more about identifying gaps in the content landscape and filling them with something useful.

How to Choose Keywords Strategically

Keyword selection is more than just selecting relevant terms. Here is a process to help you choose your keywords:

1. Identify the needs of your target audience
The first step is to understand what your audience is looking for. The goal is to identify questions, problems, and gaps in existing content. Tools like Oversuggestion can help you research keywords and find out what people are searching for and writing about (I use Oversuggestion every day for something).

2. Balance between relevance and timeliness
The key point in keyword selection is finding terms that are both relevant to your content and underserved in the existing content landscape. It requires a combination of research, humility, ambitious goals, and a willingness to experiment.

Choosing Keywords for Strong, Long-Lasting Websites
For example with OversuggestionI look up to see how many people are searching for a particular topic and how competitive the topic is to rank high in Google search. This site (which is already highly ranked and highly rated by Google) allows me to search for bigger, more competitive keywords. You can see it in the image below Oversuggestion I was trying to rank for highly competitive keywords like “self-esteem” And “Resilience“.

Choose the right keywords – good websites

Of course, you may also notice that I only get a handful of views because my ranking on Google is not high enough to reach a very large number of people searching for these keywords.

Choosing Keywords for New Websites
I built one last month New website on spiritual subjectsand the strategy is completely different. In the image below you can see that the hardest keyword I rank for has a rank of 43. And you will see that even for these keywords I get basically 0 views because my website is only a month old.

But the good news is this I classify for the keywords I was targeting. So, as long as I continue to develop the website (to increase its authority and credibility), I will continue to rise in Google search position.

Choosing the Right Keywords – Small Websites

3. Look for Gaps and Opportunities
Instead of directly competing with established sites, look for areas where content is sparse, outdated, or unclear. This is exactly what worked for me. Sir.y million see the article has filled a gap in the content landscape, providing clarity and depth not available elsewhere. And it’s a strategy I continue to use. Whenever I search for something and I’m not satisfied with what I find, I decide to write my own article on that topic.

Incorporate keywords naturally

Once you have chosen your keywords, integrate them naturally into your content. Focus on creating clear, useful, and engaging content rather than forcing keywords into heavy sentences. Use variations and related terms to help Google understand your topic while ensuring readability.

In my million-viewed article, I wasn’t worried about unusual keyword repetition. I focused on making the content clear, actionable, and useful. This authenticity and clarity sets it apart from other technically optimized but less useful content.

Choose the right keywords with ChatGPT

Artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT can be a powerful ally in keyword research. While traditional keyword tools provide data on search volume and competition, ChatGPT can help you brainstorm ideas, identify gaps, and refine your content strategy intuitively and creatively.

For example, I often use ChatGPT to create lists of potential keywords for each article. While this isn’t particularly useful for diving deeper into a topic, it often helps me find new keywords and article topics that I wouldn’t have thought of on my own. This approach can reveal opportunities that might be missed by using keyword tools alone.

After generating keyword ideas using ChatGPT, I refine them using traditional tools to check search volume and competition. I then design the content based on the selected keywords, prioritizing clarity, usefulness and originality. ChatGPT can also help think through titles, meta descriptions, and even content summaries, turning the 5 hour per article process I used to build this site into a 1 hour per article process. In short, we can use our existing expertise combined with AI to build websites faster and more efficiently. (Note that I still don’t use AI for this PLR items I sell.)

Final Thoughts on Increasing Website Page Views

Keyword selection is not about copying what others are doing. It’s about understanding how content is discovered, identifying gaps in existing web content, and providing clear, valuable, and original insights. My experience shows that even a “random” article can outperform highly optimized content if it truly fills a gap.

When planning your content strategy, remember to look beyond search volume and competition. Ask yourself: what hasn’t been said yet? What topics has no one covered well? By answering these questions, you can find untapped SEO opportunities and create content that not only ranks, but also resonates.
