What is a healthy life? (A definition)

It’s hard to know what a healthy lifestyle is these days. There are so many people telling us so many different things. Should we be vegetarians and only eat plants? Should you be a carnivore and only eat meat? Should you avoid carbohydrates, fats or proteins? If we avoid all of this, what do we eat to live healthier?!

As someone who strives to live a healthier life, I have accomplished a lot frustrated​ with the messages that have been sent to us regarding health. So I decided to do some research and find out what the research says about living a healthier life.

Here’s what I learned:

1. A healthy lifestyle involves eating more fruits and vegetables

Probably the most important thing you can do to live a healthier life is to eat more fruits and vegetables. One study showed that people who ate the fewest fruits and vegetables were twice as likely to develop many types of cancer as people who frequently ate vegetables and fruits. [1]. So fill half your plate with vegetables at each meal.

The minimum recommendation is to consume at least two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables per day. However, it seems that the greater the variety of vegetables, the better. [2]. Therefore, try to eat a variety of vegetables and fruits to ensure you get the full spectrum of nutrients.

2. A healthy lifestyle includes eating red fruits and vegetables

To get the variety of nutrients you need for a healthier life, be sure to eat foods that contain a variety of nutrients and phytochemicals. Start eating red foods. These foods contain a lot of lycopene. LEat foods rich in ycopene was associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer [3].
Here’s what you should eat to live healthier:

  • Persimmons
  • Red cabbage
  • Pink grapefruit
  • Watermelon

Carotenes are mainly found in orange-colored foods. Increased consumption of foods containing carotene is associated with lower risk of breast cancer [3].
