Perhaps we imagine being criticized for not completing a project to our boss’s standards. Or maybe we’re afraid of getting fired. As a result, we end up creating negative emotions from experiences that haven’t even happened yet. We create stress from the air.
Understanding how imagination works in the brain and how it can influence our emotions can open a new path forward. With a little help, we can use our active imagination to experience good feelings at work.
It turns out that when the brain imagines things, it tries to simulate the reactions that would occur if those situations actually happened. This is the same neural process that allows us to be empathetic, to put ourselves in another’s shoes and to understand their mental state. But we also use this process to understand ourselves better.
We can imagine future scenarios in our heads to predict how we would personally think, feel, and react. And in doing so, we experience thoughts and emotions similar to those that would occur if the situations were actually happening to us right now.
Fortunately, you can reverse this process to eliminate stress – by Imagine all the positive things that could happen in your future. In one study, participants used this technique for 14 consecutive days and imagined four positive things that could happen to them the next day, such as eating a delicious meal or getting hired for a job. At the end of the study, this group showed an increase chancewhereas groups that imagined negative or routine future events did not do so.
When you imagine your boss finally praising you for something you did well, or when you imagine yourself getting the promotion you were hoping for, you are essentially telling your brain to react as if those things were happening. Suddenly you are creating positive emotions out of nowhere.
1. Start your day by imagining the best day possible.
When you brush your teeth or take a shower in the morning, take a few minutes and imagine the best day ever. What would happen? Who would you interact with? How would you feel?
For example, I could imagine that my morning would be really productive and that I would finish this article in record time – I would feel like I had accomplished something. Then I imagine my meeting with a potential new client and we hit it off immediately – I am filled with joy and joy. The day ends by answering a few open-ended questions so that I can completely disconnect from work and then enjoy the evening. As you imagine it, try to create the emotions that would arise if your day went exactly as you wanted.
2. Give yourself a fantastic break before new situations.
Before meeting with your boss or giving a presentation to your colleagues, take a moment and imagine what would happen if everything went well. Would you have an inspiring conversation? Would everyone like your ideas? Realize for yourself how this would happen and imagine what it would be like.
Bring out those emotions and let them feel. At least you will approach the situation in a good mood.
3. End your day thinking about a better future.
Before you go to bed, imagine what tomorrow might look like – not in the way you imagine, but in the best-case scenario. Don’t limit yourself to thinking about things that could actually happen. Get creative and imagine that you will be able to fly tomorrow or that your workplace is suddenly full of cute puppies.
Don’t worry about feeling stupid. Just participate. Not only will this exercise make you smile, but it can also help you develop your imagination, making it easier to dream about the future in general.
Of course, imagining something does not necessarily make it come true. For example, if your boss is never satisfied with your work, this is obviously a real problem that requires a real solution.
