To successfully add probiotic foods to your diet, try the sauerkraut protocol:
- Buy a jar of sauerkraut. Make sure the jar is refrigerated, contains live cultures, and contains no preservatives. Here is one practical guide to help you find the right one.
- Consume 1 tablespoon of sauerkraut during a meal. Pay attention to how you feel. If you experience life-threatening symptoms (I did!), continue eating this small amount once a day until you no longer feel unwell. If you already feel good, move on to the next step.
- Increase the amount of sauerkraut you eat by 1 tablespoon per meal.Continue to pay attention to how you feel. And continue to increase your dose until you reach 1/2 cup of sauerkraut per meal. Make sure you don’t go too fast or you’ll kill too many bad bugs and feel like trash.
- Continue this slow building process with other probiotic foods. Once you can tolerate sauerkraut, try kimchi, coconut yogurt, coconut kefir, kvass, kombucha, fermented fruits, etc. until you can eat as many fermented foods as you want without symptoms.
- Make your own fermented foods. Once you can tolerate store-bought fermented foods, it’s best to make them yourself. These are much richer in probiotics and have a greater effect on your gut.
