How social media can harm your mental health:
1. Learn more about how your device behaves
So first, interview someone you trust and ask them about your smartphone and social media habits. Ask these questions:
- How does this affect you when I use social media or my phone?
- Does being on social media change the way I interact with you much?
- What impact do you think this has? Me if I use social networks a lot?
Be open to the answers that emerge from these questions to find out if your smartphone or social media habits are having a negative impact on you.

2. Track your mood with digital and real-world experiences
Ask yourself:
- Did this experience make you feel what you wanted to feel?
- What negative effects has using social media had on you?
- Is there another activity you could participate in that would make you feel better?
Remember, there are no right or wrong answers: you’re just trying to better understand what makes you feel good.

- Do you want to give up social media completely?
Once you’ve decided what to do, make an announcement on your social media to let your friends, family, and community know what you’re doing, how it impacts them, and when you’ll be available (and unavailable) on social media.
