A few years ago, my car’s transmission completely broke. If I wanted, I could have done it underlines I’m focusing on the negative aspects of this experience: the repair cost about $2,000, it was part of a series of repairs on this car, I desperately needed the car to get to work, and money was really tight. But because I had trained my brain to use reappraisal Focus on the positiveInstead of focusing on these negative aspects, I actually felt gratitude.

My commute to work took an hour each way and I was relieved not to be on the highway. I was also relieved that my partner was in the car with me and helped me take it to an auto repair shop that day. I was even happy that third gear still worked, so the car still drove well enough that I could take it to the store without having to pay for a tow. Thanks to the possibility of positive reassessment, we can achieve this Overcome challenges more easily and continue our lives. Therefore, reappraisal neutralizes negative emotions, reduces stressAnd strengthens resistance.

Positive reappraisal activity

In this activity you will practice managing the positive Upgrade. Both have been subject to re-evaluation increase happiness and resilience and to Reduce negative emotions and stress.

Positive Reappraisal consists of cognitively redefining an event more positive. For example, let’s say I dropped my sandwich on the floor and have nothing else to eat for lunch. I might tell myself that this will be a fun challenge for me or that it will give me an opportunity to spend my lunch doing something else that I enjoy.

It’s a little different negative reassessment The idea is to present an event as less negative.

This activity will provide you with an example of an event that could occur.

Practice evaluating this scenario again more positive. Re-evaluate as much as possible over the next few minutes.

Example situation:

My boss yelled at me.

What did people say?

Thank you to everyone who submitted their responses to this activity! We can now share some answers. I hope this helps you learn new ways to reevaluate.

If your boss yells at you, you can assess the situation positively by thinking:

  • Now I know what I need to do differently in the future.
  • I learned not to treat others.
  • My boss had the opportunity to let off some steam and will now be less stressed.
  • Maybe I can learn something new from my boss’s words.
  • I have the opportunity to think about myself.
  • Now I know what my boss thinks.
  • I have the opportunity to stand up for myself and be courageous.
  • My boss is interested in my success and wants me to succeed.
  • This is a good time to practice patience, love and wisdom.

Some people responded with negative reassessment (or reduce negative emotions) such as:

  • My boss is going through a really difficult time.
  • At least I have a job.
  • Maybe my boss is having a bad day.
  • At least he/she noticed me.

The next time you encounter a difficult situation, see if you can use a positive reappraisal of the situation to increase your positive emotions or a negative reappraisal to decrease your negative emotions.
