What does gratitude mean? (A definition)

Gratitude – which you can also call gratitude or appreciation – is a positive, other-centered thing emotion (Emmons and McCullough, 2004). Typically, it involves positive feelings towards another person’s actions, but it can also simply be due to the other person’s existence –I’m just grateful to have you!

Gratitude is probably one of the best things we can do to improve our lives well-being. Expressing and feeling gratitude is associated with happiness and other positive outcomes (Bono, Emmons, & McCullough, 2004). All of this means that gratitude is a good thing to cultivate. And the more often and intensely we feel grateful, the better.

Gratitude and recognition

In recent years, psychology research has focused on the study of gratitude and gratitude. One of the most consistent ways to do this is to develop gratitude interventions, interventions designed to teach people how to practice gratitude in their real lives.
