Research shows that the ability to think about how we will feel about something in the future can help us get through difficult situations and reduce negative emotions. Here’s how to do it.

Temporal distance refers to our ability to think about the results of stressful events in the relatively distant future. For example, you might say to yourself, “Time heals all wounds” or “This too shall pass.” The ability to think about a future where things won’t be so bad helps you get through difficult situations. It can Reduce the intensity of negative emotions and stress caused by the situation.
Practice temporal distancing
Remember a recent stressful event. Make sure you choose something specific. For example, try to remember “When Sam broke up with you” instead of relationship breakups in general. Now imagine what your life will be like five years after this event. Ask yourself these questions to maintain temporal distance.
What will you be doing in 5 years?
How will you spend your time?
How will you feel?
What do you think of this special event?
Think or write about your life five years after the event.
Use Google Calendar to practice time spacing
The next time something really bothers you, open Google Calendar and look for the date that is a year after the stressful event. In the Description box, think about how you feel now and how you think you will feel in the future. Set an alarm for this date to remind yourself to think about how your feelings have changed in a year.
And the next time you find yourself in the middle of a stressful situation, try to view the situation from a future perspective.
