What do I mean by that? Well, you will see books on mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy or positive psychology. Any book is helpful, but if you only learn one type of happiness skill, you’ll be ill-equipped to deal with all kinds of things that could get in the way of your happiness.
Think about it this way. Let’s say you want to build a fence, but you only have a screwdriver. Can you build the fence? What if I gave you a bag of screwdrivers in all different sizes and shapes? Can you build the fence now?
What if I gave you a diverse set of tools instead – like a hammer, a screwdriver, and a tape measure? Wouldn’t it be easier for you to build a fence? Probably.
When it comes to happiness, research shows that we improve more quickly when we have different tools.
